I was called to the British Columbia bar in 1983 after graduating in business [B. Comm (1977); accounting, finance, computing], and Law [L.L.B. (1981)] from Queen's University. I'm comfortable with accounting issues and reports (financial statements, economic reports, losses and valuations). I practiced litigation for 18 years in a variety of disciplines. For two years (2000-2002), I was in-house counsel for a public company (Image Power Inc, a technology company specializing in JPEG image compression and ISO participation). I started my own tech company in 2003 in Robotics. Presently I am in-house counsel for two high-tech companies, managing intellectual property and licensing matters (including open source), as well as employer-employee issues. I've done mediation work in the fields of intellectual property and licensing, business dissolution, and insurance (personal injury & disability). In my spare time, I enjoy reading newspapers and news magazines, woodworking, gardening, long-distance motorcycle adventures (on/off-road), and caring for my pets.

I have enjoyed a successful mediation practice since 1998, based in Vancouver and Vancouver Island, and have mediated thousands of matters in all areas of British Columbia and also in Alberta. I am primarily involved in cases dealing with personal injury litigation, and have been involved in the insurance litigation industry since 1988. I have mediated numerous multi-party complex cases and specialize in resolving difficult large loss matters. As well, I am experienced conducting mediations on the Zoom platform for clients that are not able to participate in person.

I have extensive small business experience, farming experience, experience in the import/export business and the petroleum industry. In my leisure time I enjoy tending to my commercial vineyard on Vancouver Island and adventure touring by motorcycle in Canada and various foreign countries.

I graduated from UBC in 1989 with a BA. Until 2001, I worked for ICBC for 11 years managing a large and complex caseload of litigated personal injury claims, working closely with plaintiff and defence counsel to maintain an effective working relationship to negotiate the settlement of thousands of bodily injury matters. In 2001, in addition to running my own Independent Adjuster firm (2001-2006), I completed the Continuing Legal Education Advanced Civil Mediation course, then subsequently completed the Canadian Dispute Resolution Corporation’s Personal Injury Mediation Practicum. I have participated in thousands of hours of successful mediation over the past twenty years, including complex multi-party cases, and been a member in good standing with Mediate BC since 2001. In addition to my full-time mediation practice, I am serving as a Councillor in the District of West Vancouver. The political world is much like mediation, constantly dealing with multiple and competing interest groups. I am a huge proponent of mediation and its benefits to all parties involved and have directed my attention toward building a full-time mediation practice since 2001. I enjoy residing in West Vancouver with my wife and am active in my community. I am an avid golfer who enjoys traveling whenever possible.

Having been involved in the auto insurance business for close to 40 years, I have had the opportunity to participate directly in the resolution of thousands of claims. I have worked for ICBC as a senior claims examiner and as a senior manager. In addition, I have worked as a consultant for plaintiff law firms for a number of years, including working as a MVA Practice Manager for a busy law firm. This experience has allowed me to understand the technical complexities inherent in many disputes. It has also provided me with first-hand knowledge about what is required by insurance companies to properly assess and pay claims. Just as important, my experience has given me a great deal of insight into the tremendous toll injuries can have on individuals. I have participated in well over 1,000 mediations, primarily in B.C. but also in other jurisdictions in Canada and the U.S.A.

I have been a member of the Law Society and a trial lawyer since 1981. I was appointed QC in 2015. I have practiced personal injury, criminal, family, commercial and employment law. I focus on mediation of personal injury, estate and wills variation, and employment claims. My wife and I have three sons who live locally, and I believe in community service. I am a past President of the Surrey Bar Association, past President of Baseball B.C., and director of Baseball Canada. I was a Delta Parks Commissioner for 13 years, a member of the Delta Police Board for 6 years, and I am currently a member of the Trial Lawyers of B.C., the Law Society of B.C., and the Canadian Bar Association. I enjoy photography, skiing, and travel. I believe that collaborative mediation is a viable alternative to civil litigation in the court process. Since 2020 on-line mediations are common, but they lack the direct contact and immediacy of in-person mediation. Therefore, I offer in-person, or virtual online, or a hybrid of both formats. I have been a practicing personal injury lawyer in since 1982.  My practice was in Kamloops with Morelli Chertkow where I was managing partner for 28 years prior to becoming associate counsel in 2022. Being in the interior of the province allowed me the flexibility to act for both plaintiff and defence, which I have done for my entire career. Acting on both sides has provided a unique perspective and insight on preparing and litigating personal injury cases. I have been mediating since 2001 after receiving requests from other counsel, as well as adjusters, who dealt with me over the years and respected my candour, common sense, and ability as counsel. I am a lawyer and have been operating my own law firm, Lehal Law Corporation, in Delta since 1992. I was called to the British Columbia Bar in 1990. Prior to 2020, my areas of practice were immigration, administrative and personal injury law; however, my current area of practice is solely immigration. I have been a decision-maker on both the BC Review Board and the Civil Resolution Tribunal. I am on the BC Civil Roster and Family Roster of Mediators and received training in mediation through the Harvard Law School Program on Negotiation. I can provide co-mediation services when necessary and am also a certified arbitrator. I provide a supportive and safe environment for my mediations. I work with the parties and their counsel to identify and address the interests in dispute. My approach to mediations is evaluative and I provide helpful feedback to help resolve disputes. As a South Asian immigrant, I understand the cultural issues that may impact the resolution of matters. I am also fluent in English, Punjabi, and Hindi. Aside from running a successful law firm, my work as mediator, and many social commitments and appointments, I have raised four children and maintain a very active, healthy lifestyle.
